When you take a Halibut hunt with Capt. Mitchell, the experience won’t be a
typical fishing trip. It will begin at the airport in Skagway or Juneau. You will climb
aboard Fjord Flying or Tal Air and fly the Chilkat Range, then land at a small airstrip at Excursion Inlet. These
waters are protected from the southeast and northern weather patterns that cut fishing trips short. This
inlet is over a mile wide and 5 miles long. It is loaded with Halibut, salmon, pelagic and non pelagic
rock fish. This tributary to Icy Straight is a Charter Captain’s dream waters. While fishing with
the latest top of the line gear, you will have a chance to handline a halibut on a kelpline with a hand made cedar hook and
learn how the people of this land have been pulling in fish long before fish poles. This is not only a
day of exciting fishing but and education in the history of fishing techniques and lore.
When you pull a halibut up from the depths of Icy Straights you will realize the term
sensory overload. While your arms are aching from the battle, your attention is constantly pulled to the
panoramic scenery of the Fairweather and Chilkat Mountains, the islands of Admiralty and Baranoff and the constant spouts
of Humpback whales. It will be easy to understand how so many legends have come out of these lands.
Come and take
part in the legends of Southeast Alaska and take with you something more valuable than diamonds… memories
Good times can’t be forgotten while others memories fade. In our minds when
history happens, this is where legends are made.
